(Text of a manifesto originally passed out by people marching with the ACT UP contingent in the New York Gay Pride Day parade, 1990.)

How can I tell you. How can I convince you, brother; sister that your life is in danger. That everyday you wake up alive, relatively happy, and a functioning human being, you are committing a rebellious act. You as an alive and functioning queer are a revolutionary. There is nothing on this planet that validates, protects or encourages your existence. It is a miracle you are standing here reading these words. You should by all rights be dead.

Don’t be fooled, straight people own the world and the only reason you have been spared is you’re smart, lucky, or a fighter. Straight people have a privilege that allows them to do whatever they please and f— without fear. But not only do they live a life free of fear; they flaunt their freedom in my face. Their images are on my TV, in the magazine I bought, in the restaurant I want to eat in, and on the street where I live. I want there to be a moratorium on straight marriage, on babies, on public displays of affection among the opposite sex and media images that promote heterosexuality. Until I can enjoy the same freedom of movement and sexuality, as straights, their privilege must stop and it must be given over to me and my queer sisters and brothers.

Straight people will not do this voluntarily and so they must be forced into it. Straights must be frightened into it. Terrorized into it. Fear is the most powerful motivator. No one will give us what we deserve. Rights are not given they are taken, by force if necessary.

It is easier to fight when you know who your enemy is. Straight people are you enemy. They are your enemy when they don’t acknowledge your invisibility and continue to live in and contribute to a culture that kills you.

Every day one of us is taken by the enemy. Whether it is an AIDS death due to homophobic government inaction or a lesbian bashing in an all-night diner (in a supposedly lesbian neighborhood), we are being systematically picked off and we will continue to be wiped out unless we realize that if they take one of us they must take all of us.

Being queer is not about a right to privacy; it is about the freedom to be public, to just be who we are. It means everyday fighting oppression; homophobia, racism, misogyny, the bigotry of religious hypocrites and our own self-hatred. (We have been carefully taught to hate ourselves.) And now of course it means fighting a virus as well, and all those homo-haters who are using AIDS to wipe us off the face of the earth.

Being queer means leading a different sort of life. It’s not about the mainstream, profit-margins, patriotism, patriarchy or being assimilated. It’s not about executive directors, privilege and elitism. It’s about being on the margins, defining ourselves; it’s about gender-f— and secrets, what’s beneath the belt and deep inside the heart; it’s about the night. Being queer is “grass roots” because we know that everyone of us, every body, every c—, every heart and a– and d— is a world of pleasure waiting to be explored. Everyone of us is a world of infinite possibility.

We are an army because we have to be. We are an army because we are so powerful. (We have so much to fight for; we are the most precious of endangered species.) And we are an army of lovers because it is we who know what love is. Desire and lust, too. We invented them. We come out of the closet, face the rejection of society, face firing squads, just to love each other! Every time we f—, we win.

We must fight for ourselves (no else is going to do it) and if in that process we bring greater freedom to the world at large then great. (We’ve given so much to that world: democracy, all the arts, the concepts of love, philosophy and the soul, to name just a few of the gifts from our ancient Greek Dykes, Fags.) Let’s make every space a Lesbian and Gay space. Every street a part of our sexual geography. A city of yearning and then total satisfaction. A city and a country where we can be safe and free and more. We must look at our lives and see what’s best in them, see what is queer and what is straight and let that straight chaff fall away! Remember there is so, so little time. And I want to be a lover of each and every one of you. Next year, we march naked.

The strong sisters told the brothers that there were two important things to remember about the coming revolutions. The first is that we will get our a–es kicked. The second is that we will win.

I’m angry. I’m angry for being condemned to death by strangers saying, “You deserve to die” and “AIDS is the cure.” Fury erupts when a Republican woman wearing thousands of dollars of garments and jewelry minces by the police lines shaking her head, chuckling and wagging her finger at us like we are recalcitrant children making absurd demands and throwing a temper tantrum when they aren’t met. Angry while Joseph agonizes over $8,000 a year for AZT which might keep him alive a little longer and which does make him sicker than the disease he is diagnosed with. Angry as I listen to a man tell me that after changing his will five times he’s running out of people to leave things to. All of his best friends are dead. Angry when I stand in a sea of quilt panels, or go to a candlelight march or attend yet another memorial service. I will not march silently with a f—ing candle and I want to take that goddamned quilt and wrap myself in it and furiously rent it and my hair and curse every god religion ever created. I refuse to accept a creation that cuts people down in the third decade of their life. It is cruel and vile and meaningless and everything I have in me rails against the absurdity and I raise my face to the clouds and a ragged laugh that sounds more demonic than joyous erupts from my throat and tears stream down my face and if this disease doesn’t kill me, I may just die of frustration. My feet pound the streets and Peter’s hands are chained to a pharmaceutical company’s reception desk while the receptionist looks on in horror and Eric’s body lies rotting in a Brooklyn cemetery and I’ll never hear his flute resounding off the walls of the meeting house again. And I see the old people in Tompkins Square Park huddled in their long wool coats in June to keep out the cold they perceive is there and to cling to whatever little life has left to offer them, and I think, ah, they understand. And I’m reminded of the people who strip and stand before a mirror each night before they go to bed and search their bodies for any mark that might not have been there yesterday. A mark that this scourge has visited them. And I’m angry when the newspapers call us “victims” and sound alarms that “it” might soon spread to the “general population.” And I want to scream “Who the f— am I?” And I want to scream at New York Hospital with its yellow plastic bags marked “isolation linen,” “ropa infecciosa” and its orderlies in latex gloves and surgical masks skirt the bed as if its occupant will suddenly leap out and douse them with blood and semen giving them too the plague. And I’m angry at straight people who sit smugly wrapped in their self-protective coat of monogamy and heterosexuality confident that this disease has nothing to do with them because it only happens to “them.” And the teenage boys who upon spotting my “Silence = Death” button begin chanting “Faggots gonna die” and I wonder, who taught them this? Enveloped in fury and fear, I remain silent while my button mocks me every step of the way. And the anger I feel when a television program on the quilt gives profiles of the dead and the list begins with a baby, a teenage girl who got a blood transfusion, an elderly Baptist minister and his wife and when they finally show a gay man, he’s described as someone who knowingly infected teenage male prostitutes with the virus. What else can you expect from a faggot? I’m angry.

Since time began, the world has been inspired by the work of queer artists. In exchange, there has been suffering, there has been pain, there has been violence. Throughout history, society has struck a bargain with its queer citizens: they must pursue creative careers, if they do so discreetly. Through the arts queers are productive, lucrative, entertaining and even uplifting. These are the clear-cut and useful by-products of what is otherwise considered anti-social behavior. In cultured circles, queers may quietly coexist with an otherwise disapproving power elite.

At the forefront of the most recent campaign to bash queer artists is Jesse Helms, arbiter of all that is decent, moral, christian and amerikan. For Helms, queer art is quite simply a threat to the world. In his imaginings, heterosexual culture is too fragile to bear up to the admission of human or sexual diversity. Quite simply, the structure of power in the Judeo-Christian world has made procreation its cornerstone. Families having children assures consumers for the nation’s products and a work force to produce them, as well as a built-in family system to care for its ill, reducing the expense of public healthcare systems. All non-procreative behavior is considered a threat, from homosexuality to birth control to abortion as an option. It is not enough, according to the religious right, to consistently advertise procreation and heterosexuality … it is also necessary to destroy any alternatives. It is not art Helms is after … It is our lives! Art is the last safe place for lesbians and gay men to thrive. Helms knows this, and has developed a program to purge queers from the one arena they have been permitted to contribute to our shared culture.

Helms is advocating a world free from diversity or dissent. It is easy to imagine why that might feel more comfortable to those in charge of such a world. It is also easy to envision an amerikan landscape flattened by such power. Helms should just ask for what he is hinting at: State sponsored art, art of totalitarianism, art that speaks only in christian terms, art which supports the goals of those in power, art that matches the sofas in the Oval Office. Ask for what you want, Jesse, so that men and women of conscience can mobilize against it, as we do against the human rights violations of other countries, and fight to free our own country’s dissidents.

Queers are being attacked on all fronts and I’m afraid it’s ok with us.In 1969,

Queers, were attacked. It wasn’t ok. Queers fought back, took the streets.

In 1990, there were 50 “Queer Bashings” in the month of May alone. Violent attacks. 3,720 men, women and children died of AIDS in the same month, caused by a more violent attack – government inaction, rooted in society’s growing homophobia. This is institutionalized homophobia, perhaps more dangerous to the existence of queers because the attackers are faceless. We allow these attacks by our own continued lack of action against them. AIDS has affected the straight world and now they’re blaming us for AIDS and using it as a way to justify their violence against us. They don’t want us anymore. They will beat us, rape us and kill us before they will continue to live with us. What will it take for This not to be ok? Feel some rage. If rage doesn’t empower you, try fear. If that doesn’t work try panic.

Be proud. Do whatever you need to do to tear yourself away from your customary state of acceptance. Be free. Shout.

In 1969, Queers fought back. In 1990, Queers say ok.

I hate Jesse Helms. I hate Jesse Helms so much I’d rejoice if he dropped down dead. If someone killed him I’d consider it his own fault.

I hate Ronald Reagan, too, because he mass-murdered my people for eight years. But to be honest, I hate him even more for eulogizing Ryan White without first admitting his guilt, without begging forgiveness for Ryan’s death and for the deaths of tens of thousands of other PWA’s – most of them queer. I hate him for making a mockery of our grief.

I hate the f—ing Pope, and I hate John f—ing Cardinal O’Connor, and I hate the whole f—ing Catholic Church. The same goes for the Military, and especially for Amerika’s Law Enforcement Officials – the cops – state sanctioned sadists who brutalize street transvestites, prostitutes and queer prisoners. I also hate the medical and mental health establishments, particularly the psychiatrist who convinced me not to have sex with men for three years until we (meaning he) could make me bisexual rather than queer. I also hate the education profession, for its share in driving thousands of queer teens to suicide every year. I hate the “respectable” art world; and the entertainment industry, and the mainstream media, especially The New York Times. In fact, I hate every sector of the straight establishment in this country – the worst of whom actively want all queers dead, the best of whom never stick their necks out to keep us alive.

I hate straight people who think they have anything intelligent to say about “outing.” I hate straight people who think stories about themselves are “universal” but stories about us are only about homosexuality. I hate straight recording artists who make their careers off of queer people, then attack us, then act hurt when we get angry and then deny having wronged us rather than apologize for it. I hate straight people who say, “I don’t see why you feel the need to wear those buttons and t-shirts. I don’t go around tell the whole world I’m straight.”

I hate that in twelve years of public education I was never taught about queer people. I hate that I grew up thinking I was the only queer in the world, and I hate even more that most queer kids still grow up the same way. I hate that I was tormented by other kids for being a faggot, but more that I was taught to feel ashamed for being the object of their cruelty, taught to feel it was my fault. I hate that the Supreme Court of this country says it’s okay to criminalize me because of how I make love. I hate that so many straight people are so concerned about my goddamned sex life. I hate that so many twisted straight people become parents, while I have to fight like hell to be allowed to be a father. I hate straights.

I wear my pink triangle everywhere. I do not lower my voice in public when talking about lesbian love or sex. I always tell people I’m a lesbian. I don’t wait to be asked about my “boyfriend.” I don’t say it’s “no one’s business.”

I don’t do this for straight people. Most of them don’t know what the pink triangle even means. Most of them couldn’t care less that my girlfriend and I are totally in love or having a fight on the street. Most of them don’t notice us no matter what we do. I do what I do to reach other lesbians. I do what I do because I don’t want lesbians to assume I’m a straight girl. I am out all the time, everywhere, because I want to reach you. Maybe you’ll notice me, maybe start talking, maybe we’ll become friends. Maybe we won’t say a word but our eyes will meet and I will imagine you naked, sweating, openmouthed, your back arched as I am f—ing you. And we’ll be happy to know we aren’t the only ones in the world. We’ll be happy because we found each other, without saying a word, maybe just for a moment.

You won’t wear a pink triangle on that linen lapel. You won’t meet my eyes if I flirt with you on the street. You avoid me on the job because I’m “too” out. You chastise me in bars because I’m “too political.” You ignore me in public because I bring “too much” attention to “my” lesbianism. But then you want me to be your lover, you want me to be your friend, you want me to love you, support you, fight for “our” right to exist.

You talk, talk, talk about invisibility and then retreat to your homes to nest with your lovers or carouse in a bar with pals and stumble home in a cab or sit silently and politely by while your family, your boss, your neighbors, your public servants distort and disfigure us, deride us and punish us. Then home again and you feel like screaming. Then you pad your anger with a relationship or a career or a party with other dykes like you and still you wonder why we can’t find each other, why you feel lonely, angry, alienated.

When I risk it all to be out, I risk it for both of us. When I risk it all and it works (which it often does if you would try), I benefit and so do you. When it doesn’t work, I suffer and you do not.

But girl you can’t wait for other dykes to make the world safe for you. stop waiting for a better more lesbian future! The revolution could be here if we started it.

Where are you sisters? I’m trying to find you, I’m trying to find you. How come I only see you on Gay Pride Day?

When anyone assaults you for being queer, it is queer bashing. Right?

A crowd of 50 people exit a gay bar as it closes. Across the street, some straight boys are shouting “Faggots” and throwing beer bottles at the gathering, which outnumbers them by 10 to 1. Three queers make a move to respond, getting no support from the group. Why did a group this size allow themselves to be sitting ducks?

A reflection on the queer experience in the landscape of 1990s Amerika. It appeals not to straight people (read: blue eyed, bearded masculinity), but to fellow queers because queers too are complicit. ‘We must look at our lives and see what's best in them, see what is queer and what is straight and let that straight chaff fall away’. That is, queers too are agents of the system that denies them. Gender-mediated oppression won’t just go away. And so it follows that ‘girl you can't wait for other dykes to make the world safe for you. stop waiting for a better more lesbian future! The revolution could be here if we started it’.

ชายจริงหญิงแท้จะไม่ยอมสละอภิสิทธิ์ที่มีโดยสมัครใจ เพราะฉะนั้นคนกลุ่มนี้ต้องถูกบังคับ ต้องให้ผวา ต้องให้กลัว ถึงจะยอมหยุด ความกลัวคือแรงกระตุ้นที่ทรงพลังที่สุด ไม่มีใครจะมาให้สิ่งที่เราสมควรที่จะได้หรอก สิทธิไม่ใช่สิ่งที่ให้กัน แต่เป็นสิ่งที่ต้องช่วงชิงมา ต้องใช้กำลังบังคับหากจำเป็น

เราจะสู้ได้ง่ายขึ้นหากเรารู้ว่าศัตรูของเราคือใคร ศัตรูของพี่น้องคือชายจริงหญิงแท้ คนพวกนี้เป็นศัตรูเมื่อแม่งปฏิเสธที่จะรับรู้สถานะไร้ตัวตนของพี่น้อง เป็นศัตรูตราบใดที่คนพวกนี้ยังไม่หยุดใช้ชีวิต เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของวัฒนธรรมที่เข่นฆ่าพี่น้อง

ในทุกๆ วัน ศัตรูพวกนี้พรากชีวิตพี่น้องของเราไปทีละคน ไม่ว่าจะเป็นด้วยโรคเอดส์ที่ฆ่าเราเพราะความนิ่งเฉยจากรัฐบาลที่เกลียดกลัวคนรักเพศเดียวกัน หรือการรุมซ้อมเลสเบี้ยนที่ร้านอาหารโต้รุ่ง (ในย่านที่อ้างกันว่าเป็นย่านเลสเบี้ยน) เราถูกไล่เก็บอย่างเป็นระบบ และจะถูกฆ่าล้างบางไปเรื่อยๆ จนกว่าเราจะระลึกได้ว่าถ้าพวกศัตรูปลิดชีวิตพี่น้องเราไปคนนึง พวกมันก็ต้องตามเก็บพวกเราให้หมดทุกคนด้วย

กองทัพนักรักพ่ายแพ้ไม่ได้

การเป็นเควียร์ไม่ใช่เรื่องของสิทธิความเป็นส่วนตัว หากแต่เกี่ยวกับอิสระที่จะเป็นสาธารณะ อิสระที่จะเป็นอย่างที่เราเป็นจริงๆ การเป็นเควียร์จึงหมายถึงการต่อสู้กับการกดขี่ในทุกๆ วัน ไม่ว่าจะเป็นโฮโมโฟเบีย การกดขี่เรื่องสีผิวและเผ่าพันธุ์ การเกลียดชังความเป็นหญิง ความคลั่งศาสนาของพวกมือถือสากปากถือศีล และความเกลียดชังที่พวกเรามีต่อตัวเอง (เราถูกสอนมาอย่างแยบยลให้เกลียดตัวเอง) และแน่นอนว่าตอนนี้ย่อมหมายถึงการต่อสู้กับไวรัสด้วย และไอ้พวกเกลียดเลสเบี้ยนเกลียดเกย์ทั้งหลายที่หวังใช้โรคเอดส์กำจัดพวกเราให้สิ้นซากไปจากโลกใบนี้

การเป็นเควียร์หมายถึงการใช้ชีวิตที่แตกต่าง ชีวิตที่ไม่ได้เกี่ยวข้องกับกระแสหลัก กับอัตรากำไร ความรักชาติรักแผ่นดิน ปิตาธิปไตย หรือการปรับตัวเองให้อะไรก็ตามยอมรับ และไม่เกี่ยวข้องอะไรเช่นกันกับการเป็นผู้บริหารระดับสูง การมีอภิสิทธิ์ หรือการนิยมชมชอบอภิสิทธิ์ การเป็นเควียร์หมายถึงการอยู่คร่อมขอบเขต การนิยามตัวเองผ่านการคร่อมนี้ การเย็ดแม่งเพศสภาพ และสิ่งลับลมคมใน สิ่งใต้สะดือ สิ่งในเบื้องลึกหัวใจ และรัตติกาล การเป็นเควียร์คือการเป็น “รากหญ้า” เพราะเราสำเหนียกว่าพี่น้องผองเควียร์ทุกคน ทุกหี ทุกหัวใจ ทุกตูด ทุกควย ล้วนแต่เป็นโลกแห่งความเคลิบเคลิ้มที่รอให้เราได้ค้นหา เราทุกคนล้วนแต่เป็นโลกแห่งความเป็นไปได้ที่ไม่รู้จบ

เราเป็นกองทัพเพราะความจำเป็น เราเป็นกองทัพเพราะพลังของเรานั้นเหลือล้น (ยังมีอะไรอีกมากที่เราต้องสู้เพื่อให้ได้มา เราเป็นสัตว์ใกล้สูญพันธุ์ที่ล้ำค่าที่สุด) เราคือกองทัพนักรักเพราะพวกเรารู้ว่าความรักคืออะไร ตัณหาราคะก็เช่นกัน เราสร้างมันมากับมือเอง เราเปิดเผยตัวตนที่เราเคยซ่อนไว้ เราเผชิญกับการปฏิเสธจากสังคม เผชิญหน้ากับเพชฌฆาตที่ลานยิงเป้า ทั้งหมดนี้เพื่อแค่ที่เราจะได้รักกัน! ทุกครั้งที่เราเย็ด เราชนะ

เพื่อนสาวผู้แข็งแกร่งบอกเพื่อนชายไว้ว่ามีสองสิ่งสำคัญเกี่ยวกับการปฏิวัติที่จะมาถึงที่เราต้องจำให้ได้ สิ่งแรกคือพวกเราจะโดนจัดหนักแน่ สิ่งที่สองคือพวกเราจะชนะ

ชั้นโมโห ชั้นโมโหที่คนแปลกหน้าสาปแช่งให้ชั้นไปตายซะ “มึงสมควรตาย” “โรคเอดส์มาเพื่อกำจัดมลทิน” ชั้นโกรธแทบลุกเป็นไฟตอนที่เห็นคุณนายริพับลิกันในเสื้อผ้าอาภรณ์มูลค่าหลายพันดอลลาร์เดินกระมิดกระเมี้ยนผ่านแนวตำรวจไปแล้วทำเป็นส่ายหัว ยักไหล่ชี้นิ้วมาที่เราประหนึ่งว่าเราเป็นเด็กนิสัยเสียที่เรียกร้องสิ่งไร้สาระและชักดิ้นชักงอเวลาไม่ได้ดั่งใจ ชั้นโมโหที่โจเซฟต้องมานั่งเครียดว่าไม่มีปัญญาจะจ่ายค่ายา AZT ปีละแปดพันดอลล่าร์ที่อาจจะช่วยยืดชีวิตต่อไปนิดนึง แต่ก็ทำให้อาการทรุดหนักกว่าโรคที่ตอนนี้หมอวิฉิจฉัยว่าเป็นซะอีก ชั้นโมโหที่ชายคนหนึ่งบอกว่าไม่รู้จะทิ้งสมบัติไว้ให้ใครได้อีกหลังจากต้องแก้พินัยกรรมมาห้ารอบแล้ว เพื่อนสนิทเค้าตายไปหมดแล้ว ชั้นโมโหที่เวลาที่ชั้นยืนอยู่ท่ามกลางทะเลแห่งป้ายผ้าประท้วง โมโหที่ยังต้องไปเดินขบวนจุดเทียน ยังต้องไปงานศพอีกงาน กูจะไม่เดินขบวนจุดไอ้เทียนเหี้ยนี่ด้วยความสำรวมอีกแล้ว กูอยากพันตัวเองด้วยไอ้ป้ายผ้าประท้วงห่านั่นและฉีกทำลายแม่งด้วยความโกรธแค้น อยากจะฉีกกระชากผมตัวเอง อยากจะสาปแช่งพระเจ้าทุกตัวที่ศาสนาสถาปนาขึ้นมา ชั้นปฏิเสธที่จะยอมรับพระผู้สร้างที่ตัดจบชีวิตคนในวัยเลขสาม แม่งโหดร้าย แม่งเลวทรามชั่วช้า ไม่มีความหมายอะไรทั้งนั้น ทุกอณูในตัวชั้นกรีดร้องประณามความไร้เหตุผลนี้ ชั้นแหงนหน้าขึ้นมองก้อนเมฆ เสียงหัวเราะบาดแก้วหูที่ฟังดูเหมือนเสียงปีศาจมากกว่าเสียงแห่งความปิติปะทุออกมาจากลำคอชั้น น้ำตาไหลออกมาเป็นสายอาบหน้าชั้น ถ้าโรคนี้ฆ่าชั้นไม่ได้ เห็นทีชั้นคงจะตายจากความอึดอัดใจนี้แทน ฝ่าเท้าของชั้นย่ำไปตามท้องถนน มือของปีเตอร์ถูกล่ามไว้กับเคาน์เตอร์ต้อนรับของบริษัทยา เจ้าหน้าที่ธุรการมองมือนั้นด้วยความหวาดกลัว ร่างของอิริคกำลังเน่าเฟะในสุสานที่บรูคลิน ชั้นจะไม่มีวันได้ยินเสียงเป่าฟลุ้ตของเพื่อนก้องสะท้อนไปทั่วกำแพงบ้านที่เรานัดพบกันอีก ที่สวนทอมกินส์สแควร์ ชั้นเห็นคนแก่นั่งจับกลุ่มเบียดกัน ห่มเสื้อโค้ทตัวยาวเพื่อกันความหนาวที่ประสาทสัมผัสบอกว่ามี ทั้งๆ ที่อยู่ในเดือนมิถุนายน พยายามจะคว้าเศษเสี้ยวชีวิตสักอย่างที่ยังพอมีเหลืออยู่ไม่ให้หลุดมือไป เออ ชั้นว่าพวกเค้าเข้าใจแหละ ชั้นคิดถึงคนที่ก่อนจะได้นอนแต่ละคืน ต้องยืนล่อนจ้อนหน้ากระจกสำรวจร่างกายตัวเองก่อนว่ามีรอยจ้ำรอยช้ำ อะไรที่เมื่อวานนี้ยังไม่มีรึเปล่า รอยจ้ำรอยช้ำที่เป็นร่องรอยว่าความฉิบหายได้มาเยือนแล้ว ชั้นโกรธที่หนังสือพิมพ์เรียกพวกเราว่า ‘เหยื่อ’ และมีท่าทีกังวลว่า ‘มัน’ จะอาจจะแพร่ไปติด ‘ประชากรทั่วไป’ ได้ ชั้นอยากจะกรีดร้องออกไปว่า “อ้าว แล้วกูเป็นประชากรเหี้ยอะไรมิทราบ” ชั้นอยากตวาดใส่โรงพยาบาลนิวยอร์คกับไอ้คำบนถุงพลาสติกสีเหลือง ของแม่ง ‘ผ้าลินินแยก’ ‘ผ้าปนเปื้อนเชื้อโรค’ กับไอ้เจ้าหน้าที่ของแม่งในถุงมือยางและหน้ากากอนามัย ที่เดินเลี่ยงเตียงผู้ป่วยประหนึ่งกลัวว่าคนที่นอนอยู่บนเตียงจะลุกพรวดขึ้นมาสาดเลือดสาดอสุจิใส่ แล้วตัวเองจะพลอยติดโรคไปด้วย ชั้นโกรธชายจริงหญิงแท้ที่นั่งไขว่ห้างด้วยความโอหังว่าเสื้อคลุมแห่งความรักเดียวใจเดียวและการรักต่างเพศที่ตัวเองสวมใส่จะป้องกันโรคได้ ชั้นโกรธที่พวกชายจริงหญิงแท้มั่นว่าหน้าโรคนี้ไม่เกี่ยวอะไรกับตัวเองเพราะมีแต่ ‘พวกมัน’ ที่ติดโรค ไอ้พวกเด็กหนุ่มก็เหมือนกันที่พอเห็นเข็มกลัด “ความเงียบ = ความตาย” ของชั้นแล้วสวดออกมาว่า ‘อีตุ๊ดตายแน่’ อยากรู้จริงว่าใครสอนให้พูดแบบนี้ เพราะทั้งความโกรธและความกลัวที่รายล้อมตัวชั้น ชั้นเลือกปิดปากเงียบและปล่อยให้ไอ้เจ้าเข็มกลัดนั้นเยาะเย้ยตัวเองในแต่ละก้าวที่เดินไป ไหนจะความโกรธที่พลุ่งพล่านในตัวชั้นอีกตอนได้ดูทีวี แล้วมีรายการนึงพูดถึงริ้วขบวนป้ายผ้าประท้วง และนั่งไล่รายชื่อและประวัติของผู้เสียชีวิต ที่มีตั้งแต่เด็กทารก หญิงวัยรุ่นที่ไปถ่ายเลือดมา ไปจนถึงพระแบพติสต์สูงวัยกับภรรยา แต่พอถึงคราวที่ไล่ประวัติของชายเกย์คนนึง กลับอธิบายว่าคนตายคนนี้แพร่เชื้อใส่เด็กหนุ่มขายบริการหลายต่อหลายคน ทั้งๆ ที่ตัวเองก็รู้อยู่เต็มอกว่าตัวเองมีเชื้อ ก็นั่นสินะ จะคาดหวังอะไรอย่างอื่นจากอีตุ๊ดวิปริตล่ะ ชั้นโมโห

นับตั้งแต่โบราณนานนม งานของศิลปินเควียร์ได้ให้แรงบันดาลใจกับโลกนี้มาโดยตลอด แต่สิ่งที่เควียร์ได้รับตอบแทนกลับเป็นความทุกข์ทรมาน ความเจ็บปวด และความรุนแรง ตลอดประวัติศาสตร์ที่ผ่านมา สังคมได้ทำข้อตกลงกับพลเมืองเควียร์ของตัวเองว่าชาวเควียร์ต้องทำงานสรรค์สร้าง แต่ต้องทำอย่างเงียบๆ เมื่ออยู่ในพื้นที่ของศิลปะ ชาวเควียร์สามารถสร้างสรรค์สิ่งต่างๆ ได้ ไม่ว่าเป็นผลงาน ผลกำไร ความบันเทิงเริงใจ หรือแม้แต่กระทั้งความจรรโลงใจ ผลผลิตเหล่านี้คือผลพลอยได้ที่ชัดเจนและมีประโยชน์ของชาวเควียร์ ที่หากเป็นในกรณีอื่นคนจะมองกันว่าเป็นพวกต่อต้านสังคม ในวงสังคมของผู้มากรากดี เควียร์เองอาจจะยังใช้ชีวิตร่วมกับผู้ทรงอำนาจได้อย่างเงียบๆ ด้วย ผู้ทรงอำนาจที่ความจริงแล้วก็ไม่ได้เห็นดีเห็นงามกับเควียร์หรอก

ทัพหน้าล่าสุดของขบวนการโจมตีศิลปินเควียร์คือเจสซี่ เฮมส์ทั่นผู้นำสูงสุดแห่งศีลธรรมคนดี คริสต์ศาสนา และอเมริกร๊วก สำหรับนายเฮมส์แล้วนั้น ศิลปะเควียร์ง่ายๆ เลยคือภัยคุกคามต่อโลก นายเฮมส์มโนทึกทักไปเองว่าวัฒนธรรมรักต่างเพศเปราะบางเกินกว่าที่จะทนเปิดรับความหลากหลายในความเป็นคนและความหลากหลายทางเพศได้ อธิบายง่ายๆ คือ โครงสร้างอำนาจในโลกแบบยิว-คริสเตียนนั้น ตั้งอยู่บนเสาเข็มแห่งการสืบพันธุ์ การที่ครอบครัวมีลูกรับประกันว่าสินค้าของชาติจะมีลูกค้าและมีแรงงานในการผลิตสินค้าดังกล่าว นอกไปจากนี้ ครอบครัวเองยังทำหน้าที่เป็นระบบดูแลคนป่วยโดยอัตโนมัติเพื่อช่วยลดค่าใช้จ่ายของระบบสาธารณสุขทั้งหลายด้วย พฤติกรรมใดๆ ที่ไม่นำไปสู่การสืบพันธุ์ถูกมองว่าเป็นภัยคุกคาม ตั้งแต่การรักเพศเดียวกัน ไปจนถึงการคุมกำเนิดและสิทธิที่จะเลือกทำแท้งได้ กลุ่มศาสนาฝ่ายขวาอ้างว่าลำพังแต่การโฆษณาการสืบพันธุ์และการรักต่างเพศนั้นยังถือว่าไม่พอ อีกสิ่งที่สำคัญที่ต้องทำคือต้องทำลายทางเลือกอื่นๆ ให้หมดไปด้วย สิ่งที่นายเฮมส์ตามไล่ล่าไม่ใช่ศิลปะ แต่คือชีวิตของพวกเรา! ศิลปะคือสถานปลอดภัยแห่งสุดท้ายที่เหล่าเลสเบี้ยนและเกย์ยังจะรุ่งเรืองได้ เรื่องนี้นายเฮมส์รู้ดี และได้พัฒนาโครงการเพื่อกวาดล้างชาวเควียร์ให้หมดไปจากสังเวียนเดียวที่อนุญาติให้เควียร์มีบทบาทในวัฒนธรรมร่วมได้

โลกที่นายเฮมส์ผลักดันให้เกิดคือโลกที่ไร้ซึ่งความหลากหลายและการขัดขืน ไม่ใช่เรื่องยากอะไรหากจะจินตนาการตามว่าทำไมผู้มีอำนาจถึงจะรู้สึกสบายใจหากได้ปกครองโลกแบบนี้ ไม่ใช่เรื่องยากเช่นกันที่จะเห็นภาพตามว่าภูมิประเทศอเมริกร๊วกจะถูกบดขยี้จนราบเป็นหน้ากลองด้วยอำนาจนี้ เอาจริงๆ นายเฮมส์ไม่ต้องอ้อมค้อมก็ได้ น่าจะบอกกันตรงๆ ไปเลยว่าเรียกร้องอะไรอยู่บ้าง ศิลปะที่สนับสนุนโดยรัฐ ศิลปะแห่งอำนาจนิยมเบ็ดเสร็จ ศิลปะที่พูดเป็นแต่ภาษาคริสเตียน ศิลปะที่เกื้อหนุนเป้าหมายของผู้มีอำนาจ ศิลปะที่เข้ากันได้ดีกับโซฟาในห้องทำงานรูปไข่ที่ทำเนียบขาว บอกมาสิว่าต้องการอะไร คุณเจสซี่ เหล่าหญิงชายผู้ยังรู้ผิดชอบชั่วดีอยู่จะได้ออกมาต่อต้านได้ เหมือนที่เราต่อต้านการละเมิดสิทธิมนุษยชนในประเทศอื่น เพื่อเราจะได้ปลดแอกผู้ที่กล้าลุกขึ้นมาขัดขืนในประเทศของเราเอง

ชาวเควียร์ถูกตีวงล้อม

เควียร์กำลังถูกโจมตีจากทุกทาง มันน่าหวั่นใจที่พวกเราโอเคกับการสิ่งนี้ เมื่อครั้งปี 1969 ที่เราถูกโจมตีไป เควียร์ไม่ได้ยอมรับสภาพนั้น เควียร์สู้กลับ เควียร์ลงถนน

ในปี 1990 นับแค่เดือนพฤษภาคมเดือนเดียว มีเหตุ “เควียร์โดนรุม” มากถึง 50 ครั้ง เป็นการรุมทำร้ายที่รุนแรง ในเดือนเดียวกันนั้น หญิงชายและเด็ก รวมกัน 3,720 คน เสียชีวิตจากโรคเอดส์ อันเกิดจากการรุมทำร้ายที่รุนแรงยิ่งกว่า นั่นคือ ความเพิกเฉยของรัฐบาลที่หยั่งรากมาจากโฮโมโฟเบียที่เพิ่มขึ้นในสังคม โฮโมโฟเบียแบบนี้มีสถาบันคอยรับรอง และอาจจะอันตรายมากขึ้นต่อการมีอยู่ของเควียร์เพราะระบุตัวผู้ก่อการไม่ได้ เราอนุญาตให้การทำร้ายพวกนี้เกิดขึ้นเพราะความนิ่งเฉยต่อเนื่อง ความไม่คิดจะสู้กลับของเราเอง ถึงตอนนี้ โรคเอดส์ได้ส่งผลกระทบต่อโลกของชายจริงหญิงแท้แล้ว จึงเป็นเหตุผลว่าทำไมพวกมันถึงมาโทษว่าเอดส์เป็นความผิดเราและใช้ประเด็นนี้เป็นข้อแก้ต่างให้กับการกระทำความรุนแรงต่อเรา พวกมันไม่อยากได้เราแล้ว ก่อนที่มันจะยอมกลับมาใช้ชีวิตร่วมกับเราใหม่ พวกมันจะรุมตี รุมข่มขืน รุมฆ่าเราเสียก่อน จะต้องให้ทำอะไรอีกถึงจะเห็นว่าสิ่งนี้มันไม่โอเค โกรธหน่อยสิ ถ้าโกรธแล้วยังไม่รู้สึกถึงพลังที่เพิ่มขึ้น ก็ลองเปลี่ยนเป็นความกลัว ถ้าความกลัวก็ยังไม่ได้ผลอีก ลองความหวาดผวาดู

ปีหน้าเราจะยังอยู่กันมั้ย?

ชั้นเกลียดเจสซี่ เฮมส์ ชั้นเกลียดมันมากถึงขั้นที่ชั้นจะปิติยินดีหากมันตายๆ ไปได้ ถ้ามันตายเพราะถูกคนฆ่า ชั้นจะถือว่าเป็นความผิดของมันเอง

ชั้นเกลียดอีดอกโป๊ป ชั้นเกลียดอีเหี้ยพระคาดินัลจอห์น โอคอนเนอร์ ชั้นเกลียดนิกายแคธอลิคระยำทั้งหมด ชั้นขอส่งความเกลียดชังนี้ไปให้เหล่าทวยทัพทั้งหลายด้วย ยิ่งไอ้พวกตำรวจผู้พิทักษ์กฎหมายแห่งอเมริกร๊วกทั้งหลายยิ่งตัวดี แม่งก็แค่พวกซาดิสต์ที่รัฐรองรับให้คุกคามกระเทยและโสเภณีตามท้องถนน คุกคามนักโทษเควียร์ในเรือนจำ อีกอย่างที่ชั้นเกลียดเหมือนกันคือสถาบันทางการแพทย์และสถาบันจิตเวช โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งจิตแพทย์ที่กล่อมให้ชั้นหยุดมีเซ็กส์กับผู้ชายไปสามปี จนกว่าเรา (‘เรา’ ในที่นี้คือมันฝ่ายเดียว) จะสามารถเปลี่ยนชั้นจากเควียร์ให้เป็นไบเซ็กชวลได้ ชั้นยังเกลียดพวกอาชีพการศึกษาทั้งหลายด้วย เพราะคนกลุ่มนี้ก็มีส่วนในการผลักไสเควียร์วัยรุ่นไปถึงจุดที่ต้องฆ่าตัวตายในแต่ละปี ชั้นเกลียดโลกศิลปะ”แสนสูงส่ง” อุตสาหกรรมบันเทิง สื่อกระแสหลัก โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งนิวยอร์คไทม์ อันที่จริง ชั้นเกลียดทุกภาคส่วนของสถาบันชายจริงหญิงแท้ในประเทศนี้ คนพวกนี้อย่างร้ายที่สุดคืออยากให้เควียร์ตายไปให้หมดทุกคน อย่างดีที่สุดก็ไม่เคยแม้แต่จะโงหัวมาช่วยให้เราอยู่รอดเลย

ชั้นเกลียดชายจริงหญิงแท้ที่มั่นหน้าว่าตัวเองสามารถพูดถึง ”การแฉ” ได้อย่างฉลาดหลักแหลม ชั้นเกลียดชายจริงหญิงแท้ที่คิดว่าเรื่องของตัวเองเป็น”เรื่องสากล” ในขณะที่เรื่องของพวกเราไม่สามารถไปไกลกว่าเรื่องรักเพศเดียวกันได้ ชั้นเกลียดนักร้องนักดนตรีชายจริงหญิงแท้ที่สร้างอาชีพให้กับตัวเองด้วยการทำนาบนหลังเรา แล้วพอเราโกรธที่คุกคามเรา ยังมีหน้ามาเรียกคะแนนสงสารว่าตัวเองไม่ได้ทำอะไรผิดแทนที่จะขอโทษ ชั้นเกลียดชายจริงหญิงแท้ที่พูดว่า “เราไม่เห็นเข้าใจเลยว่าทำไมคุณต้องใส่เสื้อและติดเข็มกลัดพวกนั้น เราเองก็ไม่เห็นต้องเดินป่าวประกาศให้โลกรู้เลยหนิเราว่าเป็นชายจริงหญิงแท้”

ชั้นเกลียดที่ตลอดเวลาสิบสองปีในการศึกษาขั้นพื้นฐาน ไม่เห็นเคยมีใครสอนชั้นเรื่องชาวเควียร์เลย ชั้นเกลียดที่ชั้นต้องเติบโตมาโดยคิดว่าชั้นคือเควียร์คนเดียวในโลก ชั้นเกลียดที่เด็กเควียร์ตอนนี้แทบทุกคนก็ยังต้องรู้สึกเหมือนที่ชั้นเคยรู้สึก ชั้นเกลียดที่ชั้นต้องทนเจ็บปวดกับการถูกเด็กคนอื่นๆ ดูถูกว่าเป็นอีวิปริตผิดเพศ และเกลียดยิ่งเข้าไปใหญ่ที่ชั้นถูกสอนมาให้รู้สึกละอายกับการถูกกระทำ ให้รู้สึกว่ามันเป็นความผิดของชั้นเองที่ต้องมาเจอความอำมหิตนี้ ชั้นเกลียดศาลฎีกาของประเทศนี้ที่ไฟเขียวให้วิธีการร่วมรักของชั้นเป็นอาชญากรรม ชั้นเกลียดที่ชายจริงหญิงแท้ยั้วเยี้ยไปหมดรู้สึกว่าตัวเองจำเป็นต้องเสือกกับชีวิตเซ็กส์ของชั้น ชั้นเกลียดที่ชายจริงหญิงแท้ชีวิตบิดเบี้ยวได้เป็นพ่อคนแม่คนกันเต็มไปหมด ในขณะที่ชั้นต้องสู้แทบตายแค่เพื่อจะได้รับอนุญาต ให้เป็นพ่อคนกับเค้าบ้าง ชั้นเกลียดพวกชายจริงหญิงแท้

ที่ชั้นทำแบบนี้ ไม่ใช่เพื่อชายจริงหญิงแท้ คนพวกนี้ส่วนใหญ่ไม่รู้ด้วยซ้ำว่าไอ้สามเหลี่ยมสีชมพูหมายถึงอะไร คนพวกนี้ส่วนใหญ่ไม่ได้สนหรอกว่าชั้นกับแฟนสาวจะรักกันท่วมท้นหรือจะทะเลาะกันริมถนน คนพวกนี้ส่วนใหญ่ไม่รับรู้การมีอยู่ของเราหรอกไม่ว่าเราจะทำอะไรก็ตาม ชั้นทำสิ่งที่ทำเพื่อสื่อสารกับเลสเบี้ยนคนอื่นๆ ต่างหาก ชั้นทำสิ่งที่ทำเพราะชั้นไม่อยากให้เลสเบี้ยนคนอื่นคิดว่าชั้นเป็นหญิงแท้ ชั้นเปิดตัวตลอดเวลา ในทุกที่ เพราะชั้นอยากสื่อสารให้เธอรับรู้ บางทีเธออาจจะเห็นชั้น เราอาจจะเปิดบทสนทนากัน เราอาจจะกลายเป็นเพื่อนกัน บางทีเธออาจจะไม่พูดอะไร แต่สายตาเราจะประสานกัน แล้วชั้นจะจินตนาการถึงเธอในร่างเปลือยเปล่า ร่างของเธอที่ชุ่มเหงื่อ ปากของเธอที่เปิดกว้าง แผ่นหลังเธอที่นูนโค้งระหว่างที่เราเย็ดกัน เราจะมีความสุขที่รู้ว่าเราไม่ได้อยู่ตัวคนเดียวบนโลกนี้ เราจะมีความสุขที่เราต่างหากันเจอ โดยที่ไม่ต้องพูดอะไรสักคำ โดยที่ไม่กินเวลาไปเกินกว่าเพียงชั่วขณะเดียว

While the Internet does democratize access to information to a certain extent, Twitter’s limited word count and algorithms designed to encourage contentions also incite conflicts and discrimination. In Thailand, Feminists who combat misogyny online are given a specific nickname, “Femtwit” (Feminist + Twitter), no doubt with a derogatory tone. A Cyberfeminist Manifesto For the 21st Century was written and declared by VNS Matrix back in 1991, when people hoped the Internet to be a blank slate of possibilities. Decades later across territorial waters, VNS Matrix’s lines like  “We are the modern cunt,” words charged with gender undertone of flesh and bones, still proved to us that the cyber blank slate has not meant the possibility to embrace the other, but could also mean, more often than not, the ability to cloak oneself in anonymity and continue to inflict harms on the marginalized. “The clitoris is a direct line to the matrix,” and behind the screen sits a being formed by the machine.

The Cyberfeminist  Manifesto for the 21st Century

Information is power. But like all power, there are those who want to keep it for themselves. The world's entire scientific and cultural heritage, published over centuries in books and journals, is increasingly being digitized and locked up by a handful of private corporations. Want to read the papers featuring the most famous results of the sciences? You'll need to send enormous amounts to publishers like Reed Elsevier.

There are those struggling to change this. The Open Access Movement has fought valiantly to ensure that scientists do not sign their copyrights away but instead ensure their work is published on the Internet, under terms that allow anyone to access it. But even under the best scenarios, their work will only apply to things published in the future. Everything up until now will have been lost.

That is too high a price to pay. Forcing academics to pay money to read the work of their colleagues? Scanning entire libraries but only allowing the folks at Google to read them? Providing scientific articles to those at elite universities in the First World, but not to children in the Global South? It's outrageous and unacceptable.

"I agree," many say, "but what can we do? The companies hold the copyrights, they make enormous amounts of money by charging for access, and it's perfectly legal - there's nothing we can do to stop them." But there is something we can, something that's already being done: we can fight back.

Those with access to these resources - students, librarians, scientists - you have been given a privilege. You get to feed at this banquet of knowledge while the rest of the world is locked out. But you need not - indeed, morally, you cannot - keep this privilege for yourselves. You have a duty to share it with the world. And you have: trading passwords with colleagues, filling download requests for friends.

Meanwhile, those who have been locked out are not standing idly by. You have been sneaking through holes and climbing over fences, liberating the information locked up by the publishers and sharing them with your friends.

But all of this action goes on in the dark, hidden underground. It's called stealing or piracy, as if sharing a wealth of knowledge were the moral equivalent of plundering a ship and murdering its crew. But sharing isn't immoral - it's a moral imperative. Only those blinded by greed would refuse to let a friend make a copy.

Large corporations, of course, are blinded by greed. The laws under which they operate require it - their shareholders would revolt at anything less. And the politicians they have bought off back them, passing laws giving them the exclusive power to decide who can make copies.

There is no justice in following unjust laws. It's time to come into the light and, in the grand tradition of civil disobedience, declare our opposition to this private theft of public culture.

We need to take information, wherever it is stored, make our copies and share them with the world. We need to take stuff that's out of copyright and add it to the archive. We need to buy secret databases and put them on the Web. We need to download scientific journals and upload them to file sharing networks. We need to fight for Guerilla Open Access.

With enough of us, around the world, we'll not just send a strong message opposing the privatization of knowledge - we'll make it a thing of the past. Will you join us?

An affiliation with an academic institution comes with institutional access to knowledge, a power that lasts only for a duration limited by the status of the said affiliation. Such is a twisted reality that Aaron Swartz exposes in this succinct manifesto. For knowledge not to be a commodity circulated only among the few, Swartz also proposed guerrilla tactics of building networks of pirating information and channeling them to where it is most impactful—the public.

“ก็เห็นด้วยนะ” หลายคนว่า “แต่เราจะทำอะไรได้ล่ะ? ก็บริษัทเค้าถือลิขสิทธิ์อยู่ และทำกำไรเป็นกอบเป็นกำจากการเก็บค่าธรรมเนียมในการเข้าถึง และทุกอย่างก็ถูกกฎหมาย ไม่มีอะไรที่เราทำแล้วจะหยุดเค้าได้หรอก” แต่มีสิ มีบางสิ่งที่เราทำได้ บางสิ่งที่กำลังทำกันอยู่แล้ว นั่นคือ เราสู้กลับได้

Guerilla Open Access Manifesto

[The content of the manifesto represents the view of the authors and does not claim to represent the views of UCLA, the UCLA Humanities, Division, and the Digital Humanities at UCLA.]

Digital humanities is not a unified field but an array of convergent practices that explore a universe in which print is no longer the exclusive or the normative medium in which knowledge is produced and/or disseminated.

Like all media revolutions, the first wave of the digital revolution looked backwards as it moved forward. It replicated a world where print was primary and visuality was secondary, while vastly accelerating search and retrieval. Now it must look forwards intoan immediate future in which the medium specific features of the digital become its core.

The first wave was quantitative, mobilizing the vertiginous search and retrieval powers of the database. The second wave is qualitative, interpretive, experiential, even emotive. It immerses the digital toolkit within what represents the very core strength of the Humanities: complexity.

Interdisciplinarity/transdisciplinarity/multidisciplinarity are empty words unless they imply changes in language, practice, method, and output.

The digital is the realm of the open: open source, open resources, open doors. Anything that attempts to close this space should be recognized for what it is: the enemy.

Yes, there is something utopian at the core of digital humanities: The open, the unfixed, the contingent, the infinite, the expansive, the no place.

Copyright and IP standards must, accordingly, be freed from the stranglehold of Capital. Pirate and pervert Disney materials on such a massive scale that Disney will have to sue… your entire neighborhood, school, or country. Practice digital anarchy by creatively undermining copyright and mashing up media.

The multi-purposing and multiple channeling of humanistic knowledge: no channel excludes the other. This is an abundance based economy, not one based upon scarcity. It values the COPY more highly than ORIGINALS and restores to the word COPY its original meaning of abundance: COPIA = COPIOUSNESS = THE OVERFLOWING BOUNTY OF THE INFORMATION AGE.

Large-scale complexity: need for teamwork as new model for the production and reproduction of humanistic knowledge. Teams sometimes fail because they take risks. This is the heart of digital humanities: Risk-taking, collaboration, and experimentation.

Co-creation is one of the founding features of the digital turn in the human sciences, because of the greater complexity. But this collaborative turn doesn’t exclude … perhaps there is a space of hermetic works of the mad individual.

Among the highest aims of scholarship: entertainment; entertainment as scholarship: a scandal that is now no longer a scandal. To speak to an audience.

Process is the new god; not product. Anything that stands in the way of the perpetual mash-up and remix stands in the way of the digital revolution.

Dedefinition of the contours of the research community once enclosed by university walls. The field of knowledge and expertise far exceeds these confines. There is no containing it within these walls. The challenge: to construct models of knowledge creation/sharing that confront this increasingly distributed reality.

Wiki-nomics is the new social, cultural, and economic reality. Technologies and content are mass produced, mass authored, and mass administered. Social media produce culture.

Big Humanities: whereas the revolution of the post-WWII era has consisted in the proliferation of every smaller and more rigorous areas of expertise and subexpertise, and the consequent emergence of private languages, the Digital humanities revolution is about integration: the building of bigger pictures out of the tesserae of expert knowledge. It is not about the emergence of a new general culture, Renaissance humanism/humanities, or universal literacy, but, on the contrary, promotes collaboration across domains of expertise.

At the edges of digital humanities, entertainment meets the highest standards of scholarship in ways that forge a new trans-university audience for humanistic knowledge.

Beware of the false fellow travelers: they will wave the banners of change with continuity on their agenda.

Beware of the great diminishers: they will reduce anything in digital humanities and preface our work with "just" (it's just a tool; it's just an archive; it's just pedagogy). They have never built software, parsed code, created a database, or designed a user interface. They just write articles and books.

Digital humanities promote a flattening of the relationship between masters and disciples. A dedefinition of the roles of professor and student, expert and non-expert.

Digital humanities represents the woven together practice of research: a triangulation of arts practice, commentary/critique, and outreach, merging scholarly inquiry, pedagogy, publication and practice.

Many humanities disciplines were founded on and through the medium of print (the study of literature, history; translation); the rest valorize the printed word for the generation and dissemination of knowledge of their field. What does it mean to study "literature" or "history" when print is no longer the normative medium in which literary or historical artifacts are produced, let alone analyzed? What does it mean, more generally, for humanistic knowledge?

Digital Humanities is the last blow. In the 70s and 80s, women's studies, LGBTQ studies, ethnic studies, and cultural studies opened up the humanities to address issues of social, political, and cultural disenfranchisement and possibilities for re-enfranchisement. The Humanities was no longer the domain of the proverbial "old white man." Now, digital humanities deconstructs the very materiality, methods, and media of humanistic inquiry and practices. But we must continue to ask: Where did humanities disciplines come from, in response to what kind of needs, with what sort of explanatory power? How did its practices, truth-making strategies, knowledge products, media forms, and ways of evaluating utterances get naturalized??

The Humanities are contingent formations that have become stabilized and made culturally redundant at the university: As if we have always had The Department of X, which has produced knowledge about X, and therefore we can’t possibly imagine anything otherwise. Let X = literature departments (German, English, Spanish, Slavic, etc), Art History, Musicology, History, Philosophy, Classics, etc. Traditional Humanities is balkanized by nation, language, method, and media. Digital Humanities is about convergence: Not only between humanities disciplines and media forms, but also between the arts, sciences, and technologies.

How about a thought exercise in which we imagine different constellations (not just disciplinary constellations, but also other configurations of producing knowledge that can be team- and project-based, collaborative, open-ended, globally-oriented, engaging for new audiences and institutions).

Here are some new departments for the Humanities Division:

Department of Print Media Studies: Replacing literature departments, the purpose of this department is to study the materiality of texts, constructions of authorship, linguistic forms, the history of the book and book publication, antecedents to and descendents of print, as well as the relationships and tensions between print culture and digital culture.

Department of Discourse Analyses: The purpose of this department is to study the history of the triangulation of knowledge/discourse/power, paying particular attention to discursive structures, knowledge making, and the specific media forms in which knowledge is produced, disseminated, encountered, and valued.

Department of Comparative Media Studies: The purpose of this department is to study sonic, visual, tactile, and immersive media through a comparative framework. This department replaces the division of humanities departments by media form (departments of art history, musicology, film, etc).

Department of Digital Cultural Mapping: The purpose of this department is to examine the junctions between space/time, information, and culture. It brings geographic analyses together with historical methods, visual analysis, and the presentation of knowledge. It also examines the cultural and social impact of digital mapping technologies and the significance of these mapping technologies for understanding cultural phenomena.

Department of Cultural Analytics: The purpose of this department is to bring quantitative analyses from the math and sciences together with large-scale, complex social and cultural datasets.

We encourage you to come up with your own departments!

We must ask: Why do disciplines/departments in the humanities (vs. the sciences) not die? Why do we try to resuscitate and sustain disciplines? Here are some reasons (there are more): Cognitive Conservatism, Institutional Inertia, the fear of risk-taking, the tenure and promotion system which encourages repetition of truthful utterances within a discipline rather than innovation and risk taking, the dogged determination to "replace" faculty with the same...

Can we imagine more flexible, nimble, contingent disciplinary formations, in which faculty and students work on "knowledge problematics" not in rigid disciplines and departments, in which knowledge is produced and disseminated in ways that are multivalent, truly interdisciplinary, and conspicuously cognizant of their contingency?

What does the coming digital revolution of the past decade mean? How have academic institutions responded to the digital? How far will Thailand 4.0 go? These questions are directly answered by this manifesto, but the manifesto does offer a grounded account of the much referenced ‘Digital’. The manifesto leaves the reader unsure of definite answers. But one thing is for sure: ‘Interdisciplinarity/transdisciplinarity/multidisciplinarity are empty words unless they imply changes in language, practice, method, and output.’

ณ สุดเขตแดนของมนุษยศาสตร์ดิจิตอล ความบันเทิงและมาตรฐานสูงสุดของวิชาความรู้มาบรรจบกัน ด้วยท่าทีที่ก่อให้เกิดผู้บริโภคความรู้ทางมนุษยศาสตร์กลุ่มใหม่ที่บูรณาการข้ามมหาวิทยาลัย

จงระวังเพื่อนร่วมเดินทางจอมปลอมให้ดี คนพวกนี้จะชูป้ายประท้วงเรียกร้องการเปลี่ยนแปลง แต่ความจริงแล้วต้องการให้ทุกอย่างคงสภาพเดิมต่อไป

จงระวังพวกนักดับฝันให้ดี คนพวกนี้จะลดทอนอะไรก็ตามในมนุษยศาสตร์ดิจิตอล และจะเขียนนำหน้างานของเราด้วยคำว่า “แค่” (ก็แค่เครื่องมือ ก็แค่งานสารบรรณเอกสาร ก็แค่ศาสตร์และศิลป์ของการสอน) แต่คนพวกนี้ไ่ม่เคยสร้างซอฟแวร์ ไม่แจกแจงโค้ด ไม่เคยสร้างฐานข้อมูล ไม่เคยออกแบบ UI อะไร คนพวกนี้ก็แค่เขียนบทความและหนังสือ

มนุษยศาสตร์ดิจิตอลส่งเสริมให้การแปลงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างศิษย์กับครูให้แบนราบ ให้อยู่บนระนาบเดียวกัน คือการรื้อถอนนิยามว่าครูและศิษย์มีบทบาทหน้าที่อะไร รื้อถอนนิยามระหว่างผู้เชี่ยวชาญกับผู้ไร้ความเชี่ยวชาญ

มนุษยศาสตร์ดิจิตอลเป็นตัวแทนของการเรียงร้อยแนวปฏิบัติการวิจัยต่างๆ เข้าด้วยกัน เป็นการมาบรรจบกันระหว่างสามสิ่ง ได้แก่ แนวปฏิบัติในศิลปศาสตร์ การวิพากษ์วิจารณ์ และการหันเข้าหาโลกภายนอก โดยหลอมรวมการตั้งคำถามแบบวิชาการ ศิลปะการเรียนการสอน การตีพิมพ์ และการปฏิบัติเข้าด้วยกัน

ข้อคิดเห็นเกี่ยวกับข้อจำกัดของสาขาวิชาต่างๆ

ลองมาจินตนาการกันดูว่าจะมีการเรียงตัวของความสัมพันธ์อื่นๆ แบบไหนได้อีกบ้าง (ไม่ใช่แค่การเรียงตัวของสาขาวิชาต่างๆ แต่ยังหมายถึงองค์ประกอบอื่นๆ ของการสร้างความรู้ด้วย ทั้งที่เน้นการทำงานแบบทีม แบบรายโปรเจค การทำงานร่วมกัน การสร้างความรู้แบบปลายเปิด แบบที่เน้นในระดับสากล เพื่อมีปฏิสัมพันธ์กับกลุ่มผู้รับสารและสถาบันใหม่ๆ)
